1 OF 4 Project Literacy and Pearson Education are proud partners who deliver quality, affordable, exciting material for adult learners. Project Literacy is the oldest and largest provider of Adult Basic Education and Training (ABET) in South Africa. One of the unique aspects of our partnership is that all courses can be bought as a stand-alone product or backed up with accredited training. Project Literacy's ABET materials give back to previously disadvantaged people what is rightfully theirs by giving them the tools to be actively involved in determining their own future. Futhermore, through high quality provision, the materials provide the benchmark for educational redress in South Africa. Project Literacy's comprehensive range of ABET materials meets all national curriculum requirements and enables learners to attain a full GETC at NQF 1 in the National Qualifications Framework. The materials also provide access to skills training, thereby enabling learners to participate more meaningfully in the economy of the country. MATHS MATTERS LEVELS 1 - 4 Maths Matters is a modular course which meets all the unit standards for Numeracy and Mathematics at NQF 1 and contributes towards credits for the General Education and Training Certificate. The course is learner centred and relevant to the needs of people for whom maths matters most - adult learners around the country who are involved in and embarking on ABET programmes. Maths Matters can be used effectively in an integrated learning programme as it includes material, which meets some of the outcomes in the Human and Social Sciences learning area. The course approach encompasses various methodologies and some pertinent features are that it is learner centred, it is outcomes based, it recognises prior learning and it encourages learners to take responsibility for their own learning. The course provides for a co-operative learning environment in which pair work and group work are favoured above more prescriptive classroom approaches. A comprehensive
Educator's Guide and a Solution Guide at Level 4 are available. ENGLISH MATTERS LEVELS 1-4 There are 24 English readers that serve as interesting and stimulating support material to English Matters at ABET Levels 1-4. The course can be used to form the core of any integrated learning programme. In addition to the Communications learning area, it meets the outcomes of some Human and Social Sciences, Life Orientation and Numeracy unit standards. The range of themes allows all ABET educators to design fully integrated learning programmes to suit their learners and the context in which they learn. English Matters builds effective communication for adult learners involved in ABET programmes throughout Southern Africa. It is learner centred, group work orientated, adopts a problem solving approach and encourages critical thinking. It is also well supported by educator training and is therefore easy to implement in the classroom. An Educator's Guide
for English Matters Levels 1 and 2 deals with the appropriate methodology
for the language literacy and communications learning area and gives
detailed guidance in the teaching of the different learning activities.
An Educator's Guide for Levels 3 and 4 will be available shortly. AGRICULTURE Seeds of Learning is an introductory agriculture course for adult learners. It draws on unit standards in Applied Agriculture and Agriculture Technology (AAAT) together with Language, Literacy and Communication unit standards. The course prepares ABET 1, 2 and 3 learners for programmes dealing with agriculture at higher levels of the National Qualifications Framework. It also provides learners with a practical, first hand experience of basic agriculture before they participate in coursework pitched at ABET 4/NQF 1. Fields of Learning is a practical course for adults interested in agriculture as a way of life and as a way of making a living. The skills and knowledge gained are at ABET Level 4 of NQF 1. Fields of Learning
focuses on the skills needed to set up and run a small-scale crop or
livestock venture. It includes 20 practical projects and provides approximately
200 hours of class-based activities. The course is designed
to ensure that learners meet the outcomes of the unit standards for
Applied Agriculture and Agriculture Technology at NQF 1. The course consists
of a course book and a workbook for learners.
