TOURISM
Tourism is fast becoming the main growth sector of our economy as South
Africa climbs higher up the list of top tourist destinations in the world.
Talking to Tourists is an ABET course designed for small-scale tourism
operators who are in direct contact with visitors to South Africa. It
helps tourism operators to provide effective service to tourists and to
acquire entrepreneurial skills. The course can be used by all people who
are in contact with tourists and who, thereby serve as ambassadors for
our beautiful country.
Talking to Tourists
is for adult learners located at ABET levels 1 and 2 of the National
Qualifications Framework (NQF). It meets the ABET 2 unit standard requiring
learners to engage in a range of listening and speaking interactions
and applies this to material relevant to tourism operators. It is therefore
the foundation phase of a learning pathway leading to a qualification
in the Tourism and Hospitality learning area NQF 1.
SMME
Learn to Earn
Learn to Earn is a short course aimed at building small, medium and micro
entrepreneurs and developing their skills in this elective learning area.
The course draws on SMME ABET NQF 1/Level 4 unit standards but delivers
these at an ABET 2 level. Language and Communications outcomes at ABET
Level 2 and Numeracy outcomes at ABET Level 1 are deliberately incorporated
in the course in order to pitch it at the correct level for most entrepreneurs
in southern Africa.
Learn to Earn is
informative and interactive in that learners use the input they gain
from the course to try out various business projects in activity based
teams. There is comprehensive coverage of the various business sectors,
ranging from the retail to the manufacturing and service sectors.
Learners gain confidence
in applying business terms, skills and ideas to their business projects
and when writing a simple business plan. The course also includes case
studies of successful and unsuccessful small and micro- businesses.
ECONOMIC AND MANAGEMENT SCIENCES
World of Work
World of Work is a modular course for adult learners, which meets all
the unit standards in the Economic and Management Science, a core learning
area at NQF Level 1.In so doing, the course contributes towards learners'
achievement of nationally recognized accreditation.
World of Work consists of the following modules:
| >> |
Entrepreneurship
|
| >> |
Contracting
|
| >> |
Economics |
| >> |
Management |
| >> |
Accounting |
Together these modules
cover the full range of skills and knowledge that adult learners need
in order to function as effective business-minded individuals. The course
explores ways of empowering learners both inside and outside the classroom
by enabling them to identify the procedures for starting and maintaining
a business enterprise. It also provides learners with knowledge about
various economic systems, which allows them to evaluate the best models
of production within the South African context. On a practical level,
the course builds an understanding of basic management styles and practices,
the drawing up of contracts and basic accounting. Above all, World of
Work enhances the capacity of ordinary South Africans to create and manage
wealth, and in so doing contributes to the economic recovery and development
of the African continent.
HEALTH MATTERS
Health Matters is an outcomes-based course that meets the Ancillary Health
Care unit standards at Level 1 in the National Qualifications Framework.
Through carefully chosen themes, the course provides a broad introduction
to the promotion of community health in South Africa by examining what
health means to us and by looking at issues that both hinder and promote
good health for all.
Since health promotion
means more than managing disease, the course also deals with issues
around sanitation, hygiene and the environment, linking these to a need
for full community participation. An understanding of the human body
and the relationship between different body systems is covered in the
introduction to diseases. The causes and symptoms of disease, the spread
of infectious diseases and their prevention are then examined with reference
to developing communities. Treatment of disease, injury and first aid
are also dealt with at a basic level.
This practical,
learner centred course offers a great deal of useful information, guidelines
and hands-on advice. The content is relevant to situations that relate
directly to learners personal experiences of health in their communities
and workplaces. In short, Health Matters contributes to the health and
general well-being of all people who read it.
