Science Matters Series

Science Matters is a course for ABET learners which meets the unit standards in the Natural Sciences Learning Area at NQF 1. It also supports learners who are in a Further Education and Training (FET) environment.

The series consists of the following modules: Life and Living, Matter and Materials, Energy and Change, Earth and Beyond.

Besides covering the essential concepts and principles of a formal curriculum, Science Matters deals with topics like environmental and social issues, health and safety and the utilisation of resources. The course emphasises science in the real world and makes learners active participants in the learning process. Through projects, discussions and other practical activities, the course builds a meaningful understanding of concepts which learners can apply in their everyday lives. In addition, the course has numerous investigations that are designed to allow for experimental work with inexpensive, simple and readily available materials.

The prior knowledge and experience of learners is recognised and their learning progression is from the known to the unknown through a problem-solving approach. Learners who complete the course will be eligible to gain nationally recognised accreditation.
